Officials at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, have stated that it will be one of the first congregations to perform same-sex marriages, as they announced Wednesday.
The National Cathedral is one of the most prominent churches in the US, having hosted inaugural services and funerals for Presidents, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors.
This comes after the legalization of same-sex marriage in Washington, DC, as well as in Maryland. The church's diocese encompasses DC and four Maryland counties. Each priest can decide for himself whether to perform the ceremonies.
However, it is likely that no same-sex marriages will be performed there for at least six months to a year, due to the schedule of the church and its premarital counseling requirements. Such weddings will also be limited to couples affiliated with the cathedral. At this time, there have been no requests for same-sex weddings.
